I wasn’t using my DVD writer for few months. I shifted my house recently. When I need to use it, it is not working.
It is SONY DVD RW (original). It doesn’t give any trouble for reading CD or DVD. When it comes to matter of writing, the problem starts.
Funny thing is that I could write CD but not DVD. When I try to write DVD, I get a message box saying power calibration error.
I searched about this error in google and I got some good answers. There were few methods which might rectify this error.
These are the methods which I followed but the problem still remains.
1) I try to write with minimum speed “2x” using Nero.
2) I reinstalled Nero.
3) I removed Nero using uninstaller which cleared even the registry of it.
4) I used different version of Nero.
5) I tried CD burner XP pro despite Nero.
6) I disabled the IMAPI service. It is found under Control panel->Administrative tools->Services. Now I have put that in manual.
7) I used DVD cleaning lens.
8) I reinserted IDE & power cable of DVD drive.
9) I removed the DVD drive completely and cleaned the lens manually with soft cloth.
10) ‘I checked my DVD drive in another computer. It worked fine. Even I could write DVD.’
11) I reinserted the drive in my computer and restarted.
12) BIOS didn’t detect the drive. I tried several times.
13) I reinserted the IDE cable from the motherboard.
14) BIOS detected the drive but it is not shown in windows explorer.
The removable storages are those for workstations.
- I scanned the hardware from device manager. Even it didn’t detect.
- I downloaded doug knox software which is used fix registry of cd/dvd.
- Doug knox function is to remove the upper and lower filters completely from the registry .
- I double clicked that program and it asked me to restart the system to apply changes. Problem still exists.
- So finally I tried manually the function of doug knox.
There are two filters upper and lower filters in registry which would make disappear of the cd/dvd drive.
Run->regedit->HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->System->Current control set->class->{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
But those upper and lower filters were not present already in the right pane.
I gonna try one more time reinserting the ide cables and power cables of DVD drive and the cables connected to the motherboard.
Now I have changed the jumper. My hard disk was in master and DVD drive was in slave. After changing DVD drive to master, it is visible in windows explorer.
A new problem arose. When I double click the drive, it says incorrect function. Then I rectified it by enabling the check box “Enable CD recording on this drive.”
I have checked by changing SMPS also.I tried to write DVD but still power calibration error exists.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteFirst check if it is a physical problem..meaning.. cables. Change IDE cable from your friend's or new one.change the power supply (not the smps, just the 4 pin power socket.
if problem exists, remove the dvd drive and put it in your friend's pc and check by writing a dvd.
if problem exists, the cause of this problem mostly (may also b problem in mobo, smps etc) is in software level so
check with a bootable CD either linux or windows live cd. if it is not even detected in live cd change SMPS from your friend's and check. ( i know it is kind of tiring n boring but there is no option left other than to thoroughly isolation the problem by process of elimination of possible causes)
if detected surely it is a windows xp registry or some software code problem basically.
I know you tried the upper filter, lower filter thingy etc etc etc.
so put the windows xp cd from which you installed OS. then... start>> run >>type sfc/ scannow (NOTE: This will scan the OS installation files in the system, system32 folders etc and replace any modified , altered files to default from the cd.. sfc stands for system file checker.
even after doing this if problem exists, install windows xp or something in another partition and check if it is detecting. if it s not getting detected in new os in the new partition ( with the new cables connected)then there is no other option left other than to conclude it is a hardware level problem ...either in your dvd drive or mobo or your power source (SMPS).
I think I have covered all points and this helps.
I recommend you try each and every step down to the T with your own ideas ( logical & sensible).
and then sms me! :-)

thanks I will 1st try the Run command thing by putting XP cd. u said tat it replace the modified registry. I am afraid whether it would affect any other thing. i.e some softwares.
ReplyDeleteWat I am saying is tat I would have modified several things. Bcoz each & every changes tat u do records in registry.
for eg if u disable the shutdown button by some kind, registry disables the shutdown. I didn't do anything like tat. But I would have done a lot like tat. IS IT SAFE?
